Curriculum
The Pre-Kindergarten student's first experiences are in a classroom that is friendly and interesting. While the curriculum outlines definite goals, the instructor recognizes each child's individuality and their own unique timetable for growth. Stimulating activities that encompass moral values are planned to be developmentally appropriate and are presented in an inclusive manner. During the school year, your child will participate in the following learning activities:

   Reading Readiness / Language Acquisition
  • Listening to and discussing stories, poems, and rhymes
  • Interacting with print by writing and drawing
  • Seeing and hearing likenesses and differences
  • Recognizing basic colors
  • Recognizing the alphabet in and out of order
  • Speaking so others can understand
  • Communicating experiences in complete sentences
  • Associating letter sounds

  Math Readiness
  • Counting objects from 1 to 30 (or more)
  • Recognizing sets of 1 to 10
  • Initial Reading of numerals 1 to 20 in and out of sequence
  • Initial Writing Stage of numerals 1 to 10
  • Understanding the order of numerals 1 to 10 and associating them with a group of corresponding size
  • Using basic vocabulary of comparison correctly, such as smaller, larger, more and less
  • Recognizing basic geometric shapes
  • Recognizing and extending patterns

   Science
  • Interact with and explore a variety of objects
  • Use senses to investigate and gather facts & information
  • Participate in science experiments
  • Use a variety of scientific tools, such as balance scales, magnifying glasses, thermometers, etc.
  • Use familiar materials to measure things
  • Observe and describe objects
  • Develop a growing ability to ask questions and to describe information

Additional Enrichment Components

    Bible
  • Bible stories, and Dailey devotionals (early childhood based)
  • Character building modeled after influential Christians
  • Reciting simple Bible verses

   Music
  • Singing songs for enjoyment
  • Using rhythm instruments
  • Participating in musical games and rhythms

   Art
  • Experiencing a wide variety of materials, such as chalk, paint, clay, crayons, finger paints, etc.
  • Experiencing using scissors and paste/glue correctly and safely

  • Participating in games and exercises which promote coordination, as well as proper motor development, both large and small

Pre-Kindergarten (Age 4 before Aug. 1st)

Overview
Our program, unique among Valparaiso Pre-Kindergartens, is designed so that all children have an opportunity to have meaningful early learning experiences, and to achieve success during Pre-K. To ensure that all Pre-K students are successful in their preparation for kindergarten we provide many specific enriching daily experiences in:

  • Following simple directions
  • Interacting verbally with others
  • Being read to
  • Retelling a story in his/her own words
  • Being separated from mom, dad, and family
  • Accepting and responding to authority
  • Following a daily routine
  • Attending to a task
  • Group interaction
  • Taking care of personal needs and belongings
  • Using technology as an educational tool and conversation stimulus
  • Identifying his/her own first name
  • Telling his/her address and telephone number
  • Running, hopping, jumping, and playing with a ball
  • Learning from real life items, such as puzzles, hammers, spoons, pennies, etc.
  • Discussing common objects
  • Using positional words, such as up, down, on, off, in front, in back, over, etc.
  • Using paper, pencil, crayons, and scissors
  • Free play with a purpose (Educational Free Play)

Teachers
Our Pre-Kindergarten teachers are dedicated professional educators whose primary goal is your child's preparation for kindergarten. To ensure the best experience for your child, our lead teachers have a minimum of an associate degree from an accredited college. In addition, each teacher is CPR & First Aid certified and also attends 20 continuing education hours each year.
